Needless to say One Direction fans have been on an emotional rollercoaster for quite some time. Between Zayn Malik unexpectedly quitting the band in March to Louis Tomlinson announcing that he is going to become a father soon, things have been hectic. Just earlier this week Zayn announced that he had officially signed his solo recording contract with RCA Records so that he could “make real music,” putting to rest any rumors that he would be rejoining the group. This really put things up in the air for fans who were not only hoping for Zayn’s return but were also worried that Louis would soon be leaving to focus on his new journey in to fatherhood.
Things were looking bleak, that is until Friday morning at 6:30am when the band dropped a brand new single, Drag Me Down, right in to the laps of their fans. No publicity. No promos. It was exactly what One Directioners around the world needed to calm their fears of a disbandment. Upon being released the song quickly began setting records worldwide. Within an hour it had skyrocketed to the #1 spot on iTunes. It went on to become #1 in 82 countries and was tweeted a record number of 22,000 times per minute during its first 24hrs alone.
Not only was the release of this song important to the fans it was also significant to the band as it is their first song as a foursome. Many have questioned how the band will go on without Zayn, who was known for being able to hit the high notes. Harry Styles answered that question loud and clear by proving that he has the vocals to be able to pick up where Zayn left off. Plus the inclusion of Louis on the track has helped to reaffirm his future as a member of the group. Fans everywhere are breathing a sigh of relief.
In just one day Drag Me Down has already become the former contestants’ biggest global success. The band finished off one of the biggest days of their career together by performing Drag Me Down live for the very first time at their concert in Indianapolis. It is evident in the footage from the show that the group is coming out fighting with this track. They are clearly ready to take on this new chapter with enthusiasm. It doesn’t look like they are going to have any problems continuing on minus one original member.
The song has been pulled down almost everywhere as far as any videos go due to copyright restrictions. However, you can listen to the track below using Spotify and also check out about 30 seconds of One Direction performing Drag Me Down in Indianapolis. Enjoy.
