Many of us first grew to know Hailee Steinfeld for her groundbreaking role as the feisty, strong willed Mattie Ross in Joel and Ethan Coen’s remake of True Grit in 2010. This role showcased the then fourteen year old’s obvious acting talent. She was recognized at several awards ceremonies for her performance, including being nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards. The actress/model has continued to impress us with her acting abilities in films such as Enders Game (2013), Romeo and Juliet (2013), and Three Days to Kill (2014). However, in 2015, we found out that Hailee Steinfeld is not only a beautiful actress but also a talented singer as she portrayed Emily Junk in Pitch Perfect 2.
Since Pitch Perfect 2, Steinfeld has released a cover version of the song “Flashlight”, which her character sang in the film. Soon after this she admitted in an interview that she had not only been working on writing some songs of her own but that she had made it official by signing a record deal with Republic Records in early 2015. It was also revealed that she is in the midst of finalizing a possible collaboration with Taylor Swift. This would make sense as the two are friends and she even portrayed “The Trinity” in Swift’s now infamous music video for “Bad Blood.”
Steinfeld has since been focusing on working on her debut album. She surprised all of her fans last week as she posted a teaser music video to her Instagram account of her debut single “Love Myself,” which is set to be released on August 7th. Everyone has been curious as to what direction Steinfeld would be taking with her music. Would her sound be more pop or country? It is evident by the teaser clip that she has chosen to go with an upbeat/club pop sound for her music. This sound seems to be the perfect fit for Steinfeld’s bubbly personality.
She has always made smart, careful decisions in regards to her career and I believe that this is the right move at the right time. She is obviously not only a talented model and actress but is quickly proving that she has a place in the music world as well. While it has not always worked out in the past when actors/actresses have tried to cross over and do music I believe that Hailee Steinfeld will rise to this challenge and prove that she is an exception to the rule.
