Mina Tulchinsky is proof that if you believe in yourself and work hard enough you can make your dreams come true. Mina fell in love with music early on in life. A classically trained vocalist, she had resigned herself initially to doing the greatest work – raising her four beautiful children.
Music would always be a part of her life in whatever capacity she was able to have it at the time. After several life changes, Mina along with Executive Producer and visionary Lisa Nkonoki, set out to assemble a team that could assist Mina in turning her dreams into reality. It was clear that Mina had a gift that needed to be shared with the world, and indeed, she has gone on to do just that.
She began training with Ron Anderson — vocal coach to stars including Adam Levine, Alicia Keys, The Weeknd and so many other superstars. Mina’s hard work paid off as her vocals were stronger than ever when she began recording her debut album All Heart in the famous Capital Records recording studio.
Since its release, All Heart has gone on to receive rave reviews gaining Mina a steady fanbase from all over the world. Her soothing mix of rich vocals with an array of languages represented on the album has really put Mina ahead of the curve and sparked the interest of listeners from all walks of life. Her music is an inspiration to many which would not have been possible had she not stepped out of her comfort zone and made her dreams happen.
I was recently able to speak with Mina Tulchinsky to find out more about her life, music, inspirations, and what the future has in store for her as well as her music.
Mina Tulchinsky Interview
TAMMY: Tell me a bit about your earliest musical inspirations. Who inspired you with their music early on in your life?
MINA TULCHINSKY: Music was a big part of my life always. My parents made music a top priority for all of us at home. We all had to take piano lessons in leaside from an early age through the end of high schools from an early age through the end of high school, and my parents took us to so many different local musical theater productions as well as classical music performances when we were little. I always loved to sing and it came quite naturally, but then I started taking voice lessons more formally really in eighth grade. My voice teacher, Lee Dougherty, was a real inspiration and role model. Personally as well as musically, I was so fortunate to have such a wonderful and talented teacher at such a critical age. She is still teaching and a big success to this day. I was also inspired by my late grandparents who were always extremely supportive of my singing, and the special musical bond they shared together up until the very end of their life.
TAMMY: What is it about classical music that appealed to you as an artist initially?
MINA TULCHINSKY: I grew up listening to classical music, it was in my bones from my early childhood. Just as some families grow up with sports, we grew up with classical music. My father is Israeli and as a child always fantasized about becoming a conductor, as classical music is such a huge part of the Israeli culture. I remember all the stories he used to tell us about sneaking into concerts at the Israeli Philharmonic as a child, or dreaming of a harmonica under his pillow as he grew up in a family during wartime, too poor for such treats. Those special stories really had an impact on me, and the love my father had for classical music. I have never seen anyone as crazy about it, I guess. I have vivid memories of him conducting and “playing piano” on the dashboard while driving us to activities as a young child while classical music was blasting from the radio station WQXR.
TAMMY: Every artist is unique and has something special to bring to the world through their craft. What do you feel sets you apart in the industry?
MINA TULCHINSKY: That is a difficult question for me to answer. I guess I could say that my strength is that I enjoy working and singing in many different styles and genres. I would like to consider myself a versatile artist in that respect. Maybe I don’t take myself too seriously either. I think this is an important quality, as an artist I believe. I always like to have fun doing whatever it is that I am doing, that joy comes through in my music I hope…
TAMMY: This business is not always easy, but you seem to have such a positive outlook on life. What keeps you motivated on tough days to get out there and keep doing what you do?
MINA: TULCHINSKY Having to raise four wonderful children has probably been my biggest motivation and drive to stay balanced and happy. It was very healthy for my children to see me in a different light and pursuing something extremely personally rewarding outside of being a full-time stay-at-home Mom. Being able to be a strong presence in their lives and at the same time pursue a passion of mine was truly a dream come true!! It is also very important to lead by example and I believe this was also one of the fringe benefits of working on this project for my children. It is important to show our children that we can change, evolve, do new things, and still be there for them at the same time – an even better version of ourselves sometimes…!
TAMMY: You have such an incredible collection of music. Tell me about your experience in making your album ALL HEART. It’s amazing and something that you should be very proud of. What were some of the highlights and challenges that you faced?
MINA TULCHINSKY: The whole experience was absolutely incredible! It was like an artist making a beautiful painting not from crayons, but from the most fabulous water colors available and in the most beautiful setting. Everyone working on the project had something special and unique to offer. It was the combination of everyone’s positive attitude, and their unique personalities and talents that made the project so spectacular. The recording process was probably the most exciting part of the whole experience. It’s a very intimate experience getting to create and make beautiful sounds sealed off in the privacy of a studio recording booth. I was really able to focus completely on the music, expressing myself as best as I could and making my best vocal sound at each take. It was like a party when we all got together, and the creation of making music at the same time was like a double blessing!! I guess the only downside if there was one was having to get on a plane as I don’t love to fly…
TAMMY: How has music changed your life?
MINA TULCHINSKY: Music has not really changed my life because it has always been a constant part of my life. I turn to music for pleasure, at different times and for different reasons. The act of creating music and making this album has most definitely changed my life for the better. Focusing on something so extremely positive, rewarding and uplifting, after facing a very challenging personal time in my life changed my entire outlook and has given me a more positive and hopeful attitude on life, handling challenges and helping others. It has also been fulfilling for me to see the impact my music has on peoples’ emotions, especially the older generation, which is often neglected the most in our society…
TAMMY: What has been your greatest lesson that you have learned so far with your musical career?
MINA TULCHINSKY: I have learned that there are really two elements to making an album: its creation, and what comes afterwards. I am definitely more of a process person, the whole marketing aspect is a completely new game to me.
TAMMY: What are you currently working on or have coming up that you are excited to share with your fans?
MINA TULCHINSKY: I am very excited to heal and help as many listeners as I can through my music. This project has been so healing for me that I would like to help others recover from terminal illnesses or stress related disease if possible. We are currently in the process of donating CD’s to cancer centers, Alzheimer’s patients, hospitals, senior living facilities and other organizations around the country. If I can make a person feel better or more hopeful by listening to even one of my songs, then I will feel I have accomplished something great.
