If you haven’t heard of Awaiting Daylight then you may want to dig in a little and check out some if their stuff. This four-piece Dallas based rock band is hitting the Dallas rock scene hard and they continue to trend up.
Fueled by a mutual interest in 80’s, 90’s and current rock/indie music, Awaiting Daylight was formed in late 2014 when the four current band members came together after participating in other bands that didn’t work out.
Ranging in age from 18 – 21, they have been playing music all their lives. Awaiting Daylight was just the next logical step. Once formed the band began recording original material almost immediately. They have already released a 3 song EP and are scheduled to go into the studio with Alex Gerst, of Empire Sound Studio to record their first full length album. They have been aligned with artists such as Shinedown, Seether, Circa Survive and Trapt.
I was recently able to interview Nyssa Garcia, the lead singer of Awaiting Daylight. I posed a few questions for her just to get a feel of what they are doing, their thought process, and what their plans for the future were.
Awaiting Daylight Interview with Nyssa Garcia
Jeremy: We touched on how the band formed. Go into a little more detail about that.
Nyssa: I formed Awaiting Daylight in late 2014, we were in different bands before that time and when those did not work out, we joined forces because we knew that we loved the same kind of music and we all had a love for our music that we had not seen in other people.
Jeremy: Exactly what type of music do you guys play and who are your influences?
Nyssa: We have been aligned with artists such as Shinedown, Seether, Circa Survive and Trapt. Our influences range from Joe Satriani, Metallica, Circa Survive, Kelly Clarkson and Stone Sour.
Jeremy: Are you currently on tour or doing local shows and where can people find that information?
Nyssa: Yes, we are currently doing local and regional shows and are trying to move towards a tour. All of that information can be found on our Awaiting Daylight website and social media pages.
Jeremy: Do you find the music landscape to be different than what you imagined it would be?
Nyssa: Not really different, we just love being in front of people playing music. It is a little harder to get into festivals than we thought, but we are trying as hard as we can and continue to work toward that goal.
Jeremy: Tell us about your writing process? Do you all collaborate on the process? Do you have one writer? Does it just depend?
Nyssa: Typically I will start off with lyrics and an idea of the melody and then Justin (guitarist) and Travis (Bass) create their music from there… drums are usually last. We have been known to just get together and jam and a song is formed!
Jeremy: What are some of your favorite songs and bands?
Nyssa: There is so much great music out there it can be hard to narrow it down. Life is Beautiful by Sixx AM; Barracuda by Heart; Butterfly by Wearing Scarves; Psycho Social by Slip Knot; Jenny, Take a Bullet, and I’ll Be OK by Nothing More.
Jeremy: What are the long term goals for Awaiting Daylight?
Nyssa: While we have many short term goals our long term goal is to still be around and relevant in 30 years. I think that is the long term goal for a lot of artists.
Jeremy: Are you guys currently signed to a record deal?
Nyssa: Currently we are unsigned.
Awaiting Daylight is trying to position themselves for a serious run. Keep an eye on them and check out all they are doing. You can visit them on their website and follow them on Social Media
