Deadpool has been one of the most highly anticipated films of the year so far. With it comes the killer Deadpool soundtrack, which is just as hot as the movie. The film is based on the Marvel character Deadpool (real name Wade Winston Wilson) who first appeared in the comic The New Mutants #98 cover dated February 1991. First depicted as a super villain, Deadpool later evolved into somewhat of an antihero. Many of us were not introduced to the character, though, until Ryan Reynolds brought the character to life in the 2009 film X-Men Origins. Reynolds will be reprising this role as a somewhat different version of the character who will more closely resemble that of the comic book version.
As the trailers suggest the film will not only contain plenty of action and comedy but a killer soundtrack as well. We start off with a haunting track called “Angel of the Morning” by Juice Newton that almost seems out of place in a film like Deadpool. Part of the fun of any movie soundtrack, though, is seeing how the filmmakers can take a song and make it work in an unexpected way. DMX makes an appearance on the soundtrack as well with his hit song “X Gon Give It Up” heard throughout several trailers for the film. Nineties legends Salt-n-Pepa play in to the comedic side of the film with their hit “Shoop”. Another well known classic “Careless Whisper” by WHAM! will also make an appearance in the film, which I can only imagine will be used more on the comedic end as well.
With such well known songs and artists being prominently used in the trailers for the film it will be easy at first to overlook the original scores written for Deadpool by composer Tom Holkenborg aka Junkie XL. The name may not be familiar right off hand but you are sure to recognize some of his previous work which was included in Mad Max:Fury Road. He is also the co-composer for Batman vs Superman:Dawn of Justice, which is set to hit theaters later this year. Of the twenty three songs contained on the soundtrack seventeen of them were composed by Junkie XL.
